Birthday Cake Ideas - Pirate Ship Cake

Pirate Ship Cake

Pirate Ship Cake Ingredients:

2 baked 9″ or 10″ round cakes
3 to 4 cups chocolate icing

Pirate Ship Cake Decorations:

Chocolate wafer sticks
Milk chocolate wafer rolls
A few pieces of white or
off-white paper
3 10″ wooden skewers
Malted milk balls
Rolo candies
Root beer barrels
Plastic pirate figures washed thoroughly

How to make the Pirate Ship Cake

  • Cut the cakes in half and layer them, rounded sides all facing the same direction, adding a thin coat of chocolate icing between the layers
  • Trim the bottom curves of the cakes slightly to help them sit flat, then turn the cakes upright, as shown. (Tip: If necessary, wrap the cakes in plastic and chill in the freezer to make them firmer. Also, two drinking straws stuck through the four layers of cake will help keep them together)
  • Cover with the chocolate icing, then create planking lines along the hull with a butter knife. Chill at least one hour to firm the icing
  • Use dabs of icing to anchor wafer stick gunwales along the edge of the deck
  • Press the wafer rolls into both sides of the ship for cannons
  • Cut sails from the paper, then slip them onto the skewers and set the masts in place
  • Add malted milk ball cannonballs, plenty of Rolo gold booty, and root beer barrels, then station a few pirates to keep watch
  • For safety, place the candles in the cookie cannons, far from the paper sails.
In addition, make sure that the surface on which the cake rests is impervious to wax, as the burning candles will drip

Your Pirate Ship Cake will surely be a success as it’s both tasty and looking good, but what about the rest of the party?

Before celebrating my kid’s last birthday I used a video tutorial who teaches Balloon Twisting .

I’ve seen people do that before and I got the impression that it’s not too complicated, but I never realized how easy it really is.
After a few minutes of watching the videos you start twisting balloons to shape as Dog, Mouse, Giraffe, Six Petal Flower, Teddy Bear with Heart and much much more!

Needless to say that it was the talk of the party, it almost stole the attention from my Pirate Ship Cake :-)

As the pump and balloons are cheap as chips, I recommend to take that video tutorial and to twist balloons as a main part of the party.

Happy Cooking :-)

How to make a Diaper Cake

How to make a diaper cake

I spent days surfing the net trying to find decent free information on how to make a diaper cake.
So much stuff out there is just plain gibberish, or “dry” technical instructions that left me with no clue how to actually make a diaper cake.

I followed the instructions from several sites.
You have to understand sentences such as “
Secure your diapers with a rubber band whenever necessary” (hello, if I knew when it’s necessary I wouldn’t need instructions) and 50 damaged diapers later you end up with a cake that looks like Diaper Cake from Hell.

My first attempt to make a diaper cake cost me 50 lost diapers, took days to complete and I end up buying a 109$ diaper cake when the baby shower’s day arrived.

As a good looking diaper cake costs a lot of money, I decided to do the next one by myself.

After days of searching I finally found a “cheap as chips” video tutorial that was the perfect answer to my need and showed me the in’s and out’s of how to make a diaper cake!

Most people see diaper cake making as a difficult task, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
Diaper cake making is a great fun if you do it correctly, and the best thing is, you get brag about it at the baby’s shower
:-)

After browsing through almost every “how to make diaper cake” site on the net, the diaper making instructions are detailed below (although from my experience it’s much smarter to download the “How to make a  Diaper Cake” video tutorial)

So, How to make a Diaper Cake:

Diaper Cake Ingredients:

· 16″ disposable cardboard platter

· Baby bottle or empty cardboard towel roll

· 8 feet of 1” wide ribbon

· Rubber bands of different sizes

· Clear adhesive tape

· 50-90 newborn diapers (depends on the size and the number of tiers you desire)

· Decorative baby items (bibs, socks, toys)

· Cake Topper (candy filled baby bottle or stuffed animal)

Assembling Your Diaper Cake:

· Use a cardboard paper towel roll or a baby bottle to roll your diapers

· When rolling your diapers, have them opened lengthwise with tabs tucked in

· Secure your diapers with a rubber band so they stick together

· Fold and wrap a receiving blanket around each tier using tape to hold in place

· Use a ribbon to cover and hide the rubber band and as a decorative touch

· Assemble your tiers on top of your cake platter, using adhesive tape

· Tuck your baby items in the ribbons as decorations

· Top your cake off with something fitting the theme of your party. Whether it be a small stuffed toy, a baby bottle or rattle

Other Decorative Ideas:

· Drape baby bibs over the receiving blankets

· Use baby items related only to your theme

· If using a baby bottle as the topper, fill it with candy or small baby itemsI found the “recipes” provided on the web a bit too “dry” and technical, I couldn’t really imagine how the cake is going to look like and I wasn’t sure what I’m doing at some points.

The how to make a diaper cakevideo tutorial really takes you through all the steps (Building the foundation, Making the bottom tier, Making the middle tier, Finishing the base and decorating the cake) you have a clear visual on what to expect and you get to be the talk of the baby’s shower
