Well now, this does look like cr@p.

What happened to following the basic rule of using rubber bands and rolling the diapers ?
Come on this looks like you had a wonderful idea in the making and there just didn’t seem to be any brain & eye coordination!
Sorry to sound harsh, but I have made one for my sisters baby shower and it was easy !

    Hi Bronwyn

When talking about rolling the diapers you’re right, it is easier.
The problem is that I tried to do a more advanced diaper cake, one who doesn’t look like many different rounds, but the entire cake flows together.
When you do it right the result is way mare beautiful than the regular cake; the problem is, learning how to do it takes a lot of practice or a very good guide

I don’t know how it has gotten a bad name… There are all kinds of diaper cakes ranging from simple to elaborate. This is as simple as it gets, yet still a fun addition to a baby shower, and I’m sure very appreciated by the parents to be. In some ways this is a better idea because of simplicity to take apart and use when the shower is done. My vote is that this is a good diaper cake, a decoration on top… even a bow would give it a more finished look.

  9. 9 On January 21st, 2008, DiaperDiva said:

Why don’t you try doing the rounds and then wrapping the regular folded diapers around that, and try it with pampers swaddlers that are all white except for the tabs and band, and then it might look a little better, if all else fails, wrap it in blankets, burb rags, bibs, whatever and but some of that shredded confetti paper on top of the exposed diapers in between layers, it looks really nice that way.

I think it’s mighty cute. Who cares if it’s not traditional. the point is to give the mother a centerpiece that she can disassemble and use. i’m sure no mother is going to turn her nose up and say “i’m sorry. that diaper cake sucks. i’m just going to throw away all those diapers and not use them”
    diapers are too expensive.
    get over yourselves.
    It’s beautiful :)

That is the worse thing I have ever seen, not even one proper bow. I just made my first 3 tier diaper cake and it’s beautiful. You need to take the time and effort to make it lovely. Although I am crafty LOL I have seen the cakes that are not rolled up and they seem very hard to make on your own, you need at least two people to do it.

It may not be the most elaborate diaper cake, but it is still cute. It was a very thoughtful idea to give to the Mom-To-Be. I’m sure she will love it, and love the fact that you put forth the time and effort just for her. :-)

I have just started making one in that style, and it was surprisingly easy. I think they are much easier if you use the older style disposables with the plastic-y outer and more padding, whereas you have used the kinder more fabric-y disposables. I think (aside from the very top layer) you have done an awesome first job…now you just need to work a little more on the decorating – keep going and you’ll wow ‘em with top quality in no time :-)

wow some of you guys are rude! You must be so proud of your manners. Everyone who said or asked why it was not done the ‘normal’ way have obviously forgotten what originality is.

To whoever did this I say well done for not following the crowd and for doing something original and different. I hope you are able to work from here and find ways to improve and decorate this style of nappy cake. I honestly dont think there is anything wrong with how you did the nappies it just needs to be decorated. I look forward to more pics of what you can do.

While searching for gift ideas for co-workers first baby I stumbled across this site and thought what a great idea! I’m not exactly crafty but after seeing how much it cost to buy one already made, and being on a $60 budget, I decided to “wing it” and try to make one on my own. I spent $35 in diapers and accessories. I figured I’d try to make it first and if I couldn’t figure it out, I’d purchace the “how to make a diaper cake” instruction video. It took me about one hour and no need to use the video and my cake turned out SOOOO CUTE! I even tried the more “difficult” cake, not the rolled up diaper one, I did the one that “flows”. For anyone thinking about trying this…. go ahead. Be brave, and only use the video as a last resort.

Not too bad for a first time try ! What I found that worked well is using a receiving blanket and stacking the diapers 2-3 deep and lengthwise, wrapping them uptightly with the blanket and rolling the blanket as if rolling a cinnamon roll leave the center open and pinning this together with diaper pins. The diaper pins just add to the items you are giving the mom to be. Take another receiving blanket and stack more diapers side by side and 2 tall wrap this uptighly as well and pin. Then put this into the center of the first one you made and you now have a 2 tiered cake! I use diaper pins to add rattles, girly socks rolled and tucked end up looking like flowers and I add a bottle by kinda stuffing it down the center of the upper cake. If you would like pictures…I have them. It really is easy !!

I love to decorate regular cakes and I am only a beginner with no classes and I get tons of compliments from them so i figured why not try a cake made of diapers. It was the easiest thing I have ever done! Not to mention the fun that I had doing it. Not to sound too concedieded but it was the talk of the shower! I made the cake and the diaper cake match with the same theme the mother to be had picked out for the cake. For anyone who is looking for some fun give it a try. Who cares what it lloks like all it matters is that if is coming from YOU! Your time and efforts in creating this gift, not just going to the store and piking out an outfit or two!

I made a diaper cake for a shower once by rolling and taping the diapers. We also poked random baby itmes in like a thermometer, comb, pacifiers to make it into 2 games. We guessed the number of diapers and next hid the cake while people tried to recall the itmes that were on the it. It was a hit and rolling each diaper kept things really uniform and neat looking.

I have made one of these for many baby showers…it is much easier, alhough takes longer…and rolled each diaper individually and tied it with a blue or pink (or yellow) ribbon. Then stack te diapers into a big circle and tie that with a larger ribbon (to hide the little ones) Stack the layers, put a dowel through the middle and add little baby gifts (pacifiers, rattles, etc) or just call it a day! It looks amazing and gets MANY good comments!

I agree that there are many ppl here that are SO rude! I would have been exstatic to receive this at one of my baby showers. I have been making real cakes with themes that have had many flaws. But I put 110% effort in and they are always the talk of the party. I KNOW they could be better and therefore I am taking classes. I recently made a pokemon cake for my son, which my classmates knew I would be doing. When I went to class one of my classmates asked me how it turned out. I showed her a pic and she loved it. However, another classmate said she had seen better, and no, she was not kidding! I couldn’t believe she would say something like that! SO unnecessary! DUH! I’m taking CAKE DECORATING CLASSES! Besides, I have people asking me all the time to make a cake for their parties. I think the diaper cake looks GREAT! So true, if you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything. Fellow “creators” should encourage eachother, not criticize. If you are happy with what you created, thats all that matters. Even better if the recipient likes it! Any decent person would be appreciative. If you aren’t happy with it, asking for tips is great. You ppl who were so mean, she already acknowledged that she was not happy with the way it turned out. You can give constructive criticism without insulting someone’s work. You may think her cake is crappy. Crappy doesn’t even begin to describe what kind of ppl you are. Tune in to Nick Jr. There are cartoons on there ALL day that teach manners! I feel sorry for your kids when they color outside the lines.

I agree if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all. I made a rolled one fory daughters shower with a jungle theme to match the shower and cake i made but I rolled mine. I think all yours needs is maybe an extra row of ribbon on each layer ( one more towards the top the others towards the bottom) and some others decorations maybe flowers, toys, bows or something of the sort. Keep trying and don’t let the naysayers get to you!

    Hi Cindi

I’m sorry for my late respond, this blog is my hobby and I don’t get to
visit it as often as I’d like to…

Thank you for your kind words. I agree with people saying that the diaper
cake can look much better, but I appreciate your view and I’m happy to see
that people can see the good sides and the love behind it rather than just
    point out the disadvantages.

I stopped with the diapers cake for a while and now my preferred baby shower gift is fondant cakes, did you try my fondant recipe yet? I’m sure you’re
going to love it (it’s one of my most popular recipes on the site)

You can find it on http://thecookduke.com/fondant-recipe/
