This looks like crap. Nice idea, but the ones I make are much more beautiful. Ug. This is from hell
November 5th, 2007 at 11:52 am
I can honestly say that I have never seen anything quite so hideous before in my life………………..All I can say is………..Why?????????????????
November 15th, 2007 at 10:03 am
Well now, this does look like cr@p.
What happened to following the basic rule of using rubber bands and rolling the diapers ?
Come on this looks like you had a wonderful idea in the making and there just didn’t seem to be any brain & eye coordination!
Sorry to sound harsh, but I have made one for my sisters baby shower and it was easy !
November 18th, 2007 at 7:18 am
Hi Bronwyn
When talking about rolling the diapers you’re right, it is easier.
The problem is that I tried to do a more advanced diaper cake, one who doesn’t look like many different rounds, but the entire cake flows together.
When you do it right the result is way mare beautiful than the regular cake; the problem is, learning how to do it takes a lot of practice or a very good guide

I don’t know how it has gotten a bad name… There are all kinds of diaper cakes ranging from simple to elaborate. This is as simple as it gets, yet still a fun addition to a baby shower, and I’m sure very appreciated by the parents to be. In some ways this is a better idea because of simplicity to take apart and use when the shower is done. My vote is that this is a good diaper cake, a decoration on top… even a bow would give it a more finished look.

Why don’t you try doing the rounds and then wrapping the regular folded diapers around that, and try it with pampers swaddlers that are all white except for the tabs and band, and then it might look a little better, if all else fails, wrap it in blankets, burb rags, bibs, whatever and but some of that shredded confetti paper on top of the exposed diapers in between layers, it looks really nice that way.

I think it’s mighty cute. Who cares if it’s not traditional. the point is to give the mother a centerpiece that she can disassemble and use. i’m sure no mother is going to turn her nose up and say “i’m sorry. that diaper cake sucks. i’m just going to throw away all those diapers and not use them”
diapers are too expensive.
get over yourselves.
It’s beautiful
March 30th, 2008 at 2:55 am
That is the worse thing I have ever seen, not even one proper bow. I just made my first 3 tier diaper cake and it’s beautiful. You need to take the time and effort to make it lovely. Although I am crafty LOL I have seen the cakes that are not rolled up and they seem very hard to make on your own, you need at least two people to do it.
April 16th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Hey, I don’t think it looks THAT bad for a first try. There must be some pretty good diaper cake makers out there then.
April 17th, 2008 at 5:24 am
It’s not THAT bad! Definately salvagable.

Hey I sent you a picture of my diaper cake LOL the first I made and wanted to know if you would post it. I’ll take a look around to see if you did.

It may not be the most elaborate diaper cake, but it is still cute. It was a very thoughtful idea to give to the Mom-To-Be. I’m sure she will love it, and love the fact that you put forth the time and effort just for her.
May 18th, 2008 at 8:10 am
I have just started making one in that style, and it was surprisingly easy. I think they are much easier if you use the older style disposables with the plastic-y outer and more padding, whereas you have used the kinder more fabric-y disposables. I think (aside from the very top layer) you have done an awesome first job…now you just need to work a little more on the decorating - keep going and you’ll wow ‘em with top quality in no time
May 26th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
this is not that bad…i’ve seen worse, and these people are actually selling them on websites! so, this is a good try for ur first time. my first try was really good because i did alot of research, but someone who has no idea, this is a pretty good.
June 11th, 2008 at 1:58 am
NO this is not the best looking diaper cake thats for sure.
I make diaper cakes and sell them to online and upscale brick and mortar gift shops
I have a few that I have made on flickr photo sharing you are welcome to take a look @

wow some of you guys are rude! You must be so proud of your manners. Everyone who said or asked why it was not done the ‘normal’ way have obviously forgotten what originality is.
To whoever did this I say well done for not following the crowd and for doing something original and different. I hope you are able to work from here and find ways to improve and decorate this style of nappy cake. I honestly dont think there is anything wrong with how you did the nappies it just needs to be decorated. I look forward to more pics of what you can do.

While searching for gift ideas for co-workers first baby I stumbled across this site and thought what a great idea! I’m not exactly crafty but after seeing how much it cost to buy one already made, and being on a $60 budget, I decided to “wing it” and try to make one on my own. I spent $35 in diapers and accessories. I figured I’d try to make it first and if I couldn’t figure it out, I’d purchace the “how to make a diaper cake” instruction video. It took me about one hour and no need to use the video and my cake turned out SOOOO CUTE! I even tried the more “difficult” cake, not the rolled up diaper one, I did the one that “flows”. For anyone thinking about trying this…. go ahead. Be brave, and only use the video as a last resort.

Not too bad for a first time try ! What I found that worked well is using a receiving blanket and stacking the diapers 2-3 deep and lengthwise, wrapping them uptightly with the blanket and rolling the blanket as if rolling a cinnamon roll leave the center open and pinning this together with diaper pins. The diaper pins just add to the items you are giving the mom to be. Take another receiving blanket and stack more diapers side by side and 2 tall wrap this uptighly as well and pin. Then put this into the center of the first one you made and you now have a 2 tiered cake! I use diaper pins to add rattles, girly socks rolled and tucked end up looking like flowers and I add a bottle by kinda stuffing it down the center of the upper cake. If you would like pictures…I have them. It really is easy !!

I have seen worse. I think that everyone has their own ideas and style. This cake us unique. Not everyone here making cakes had it going on the first one. It takes time and patience and it takes too make more cakes to finally get better.

I love to decorate regular cakes and I am only a beginner with no classes and I get tons of compliments from them so i figured why not try a cake made of diapers. It was the easiest thing I have ever done! Not to mention the fun that I had doing it. Not to sound too concedieded but it was the talk of the shower! I made the cake and the diaper cake match with the same theme the mother to be had picked out for the cake. For anyone who is looking for some fun give it a try. Who cares what it lloks like all it matters is that if is coming from YOU! Your time and efforts in creating this gift, not just going to the store and piking out an outfit or two!
January 25th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
Oh my gosh people just because you didn’t like the diaper cake doesn’t mean that you have to be mean and rude about it. Why don’t you make a diaper cake and put it online and see what other people think and say it’s really not fair to say “I can do better” and “this looks like crap”.
you know what go make a diaper cake and show me if it is better i will be wrong but this is VERY creative and cool. It is a different way and i like it!!!! At my baby shower I am going to have a diaper cake just like that and ALL of my guests will be amazed and I will tell them this web site and they will see this and leave a NICE comment like this and make a diaper cake just like myne. and so on. AND LIVE HAPPY EVER AFTER!
January 30th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
i made a diaper cake when my friend first showed me how it was with all blankets, but they don’t really need all the blankets, i incorporate, onsies, bigs, and outfin, bath blanket, changing pads, socks and washcloths if you’d like to see them they are on flickr under dnktat. when i get them there they become the centerpiece, they can’t be opened at the shower so i made up a little poem of what’s inside, it very hard to make a diaper cake for less than $50.00, i mostly buy brand name items, but i go to the discount stores like aj write. i charge $25.00 to make then and believe me it’s not enough but i like doing them, and i’ve made some that cost alot more with items the people wanted to put on. hope you like them

it might it easier if you use a small roll of paper towels for a base that’s what i use in my cakes

As a new mother - all I can say is, who care what it looks like? I’d be thrilled just to have all the diapers!
April 14th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Well it’s the thought that counts…but if i tried and THATS what came out…i’d have thrown the diapers in a gift bag and called it a day….leave the diaper cakes to the pros..
June 15th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
You should have tried rolling the diapers, they are way easier to control and manage then… Better luck next time
June 22nd, 2009 at 8:43 pm
I made a diaper cake for a shower once by rolling and taping the diapers. We also poked random baby itmes in like a thermometer, comb, pacifiers to make it into 2 games. We guessed the number of diapers and next hid the cake while people tried to recall the itmes that were on the it. It was a hit and rolling each diaper kept things really uniform and neat looking.

It’s ok, it is like having a bad hair day, we all get em.
August 21st, 2009 at 12:59 am
WOW?? so thats not really a diaper cake right???
August 23rd, 2009 at 7:09 pm
Not everyone call pull off a beautiful on the first try and trying to wing it. Thank God there are generous people online that will share their knowledge with us. I wanted to make my co-worker a baby diaper cake, but when my daughter saw all this stuff online, she took over. It turned out beautifully. If I can fiture out how to put the pics on here, I will show you.
To all you mean and rude people, didn’t your mothers tell you when you were growing up “if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything”. If she did, shame ln you. If she didn’t, shame on her.
Now, go and take a refresher course Manners 101.

Hi Tiffany
Thanks for your kind words
As you see in my other posts, such as “how to make a diaper cake” at http://thecookduke.com/make-a-diaper-cake/ it really does get much easier with practice.

Well,…Practice Makes Perfect!

I have made one of these for many baby showers…it is much easier, alhough takes longer…and rolled each diaper individually and tied it with a blue or pink (or yellow) ribbon. Then stack te diapers into a big circle and tie that with a larger ribbon (to hide the little ones) Stack the layers, put a dowel through the middle and add little baby gifts (pacifiers, rattles, etc) or just call it a day! It looks amazing and gets MANY good comments!

this diaper cake is not too bad, I think that by working on it another hour or so you’ll have a great diaper cake
