How to make fondant - Gerbera Daisy Cake

This How to make fondant post is dedicated to Sarah.

Sarah read my post “how to make fondant” and followed my fondant recipe.

Here’s what she wrote me:

Greetings Cookduke,
After searching the internet for bridal shower cake ideas and deciding that I wanted to make a bow on top of my cake, I searched the web for a fondant recipe. Fortunately, I came upon your wonderful recipe and read through all the comments that were very encouraging to me. I have never used fondant before but wanted to give it a try because I love how smooth the cake looks (a look I can never achieve with regular icing). I started with 1/2 a batch just to get a feel for the fondant and to experiment with it. The cake turned out great. It isn’t perfect but it still looks good. It is a four layer 10? round cake with a fondant bow on top and gerbera daisy’s all around the sides. It was a wonderful learning experience. Thank you for sharing your fondant recipe. My next challenge will be trying to cut the cake. I am going to email you with a picture of the cake.
Thanks again,
Sarah

And then she sent these two beautiful pictures:

Simply follow this “how to make fondant” fondant recipe and you’ll get great results!

I’d appreciate if you send me pictures of the cakes you made so I can post it here.

And Sarah, great cake.

I couldn’t have made it better myself…

Happy Cooking :)

Just wanted to say I am the mother of the bride to be and enjoyed this cake. Sarah did a beautiful job and it was perfect. Many Oohs and ahhs by all that attended this shower. It was so beautiful and seemed such a shame to cut it.

Simply gorgeous! I can’t imagine how this cake was cut, with all those frilly bows on top (which I love!). It was kind of Sarah to share these photos.

Just love your site. I am a novice but I soooo inspired by your recipes and pictures of the cakes. Can I use the fondant on the banana cake recipe you have provided? Can I store the cake in an airtight container or does it have to be in the fridge? I might bake the cake a day or 2 before I try the icing. Thank you very much for your help.

My mom use to be a cake decorating professional, although she has never worked with fondant.
I’m very interested in trying this recipie, but I have a question about the glycerin.
Where would I buy it? Can I find it in any grocery store? Do I need to go to a specialty shop
to find some, or do I need to buy it online?

I’m going to use your recipe for fondant; the cake that I’m making calls for a marzipan layer before covering with fondant. Is this necessary?

I’m curious… I’m going to give this a try, but I’m not sure how to make it look as though there would be no seem when I put the fondant ON the cake. Are there special instructions as to what to do, there? I mean, I can see a slight seem on this one, but on others they look absolutely seemless (I’m thinking that comes w/practice?). Do you just rub it down? Will that take the seem out? Will I get the same result if I used, say, a wet q-tip? PLEASE HELP! :(

    Hi,
I just want to say that I like your cake and I am planning to make one for my son this week using your fondant recipe. I was wonder if you could tell me if I can make a cake two days before my son birthday party? I do not know if the fondant would not get too hard and no one would like my cake, or using this fondant recipe can the fondant last longer?.
